Profile of the Month:
Team Dimensions Profile®

Tapping a team’s creative power can only happen when team members recognize and value each individual’s capacity to contribute to the process.

In The Wisdom of Teams, Jon Katzenbach and Douglas Smith wrote that a high performance team “significantly outperforms all reasonable expectations given its membership.” They added that a high performance team “has members who are deeply committed to one another’s personal growth and success.”

In today’s fast-paced business, we sometimes forget one of life’s simple lessons:  What we give, we will get in return.  When we care about the people around us, they will care about us as well.  And while team members must work together to achieve common goals, they often experience stress and a lack of team cohesion along the way.

Effective teams have high levels of respect and ensure that they are capitalizing on the individual strengths of the members.  This is accomplished by clearly defining roles, communicating those roles to the entire team, and respecting the valuable contributions of each team member.

As organizations rely more on teams to innovate, solve problems, and produce more with less, understanding individual approaches to group process is critical to creating high performance teams.

The Team Dimensions Profile® helps groups capitalize on individual strengths to improve the team environment and increase total team performance.

The Team Dimension Profile® identifies
five key roles in team performance:

Creator Generates original concepts and ideas that often defy generally accepted rules. Recognizes alternatives and perceives the big picture and is not constrained by fear of failure.
Advancer Recognizes new ideas in the early stages and helps move them toward implementation using insightful planning based on past experience and proven methods.
Refiner Challenges concepts and ideas, often playing “devil’s advocate.”  Methodically analyzes things to uncover potential problems and suggestions.
Executor Lays the groundwork for implementation, manages the details and moves the process to completion and quality outcomes.
Flexer Monitors the contributions of all team members and makes sure tasks are handed off at the right time in the process.

The Team Dimensions Profile® helps teams:

  • Identify individual strengths and approaches to teamwork.Match individual strengths with team roles. Reinforce and appreciate the contributions of every team member. Reduce team frustration and conflict. Foster trust and create a positive team environment.
  • Reduce project cycle time and increase productivity.
